you should download from the good site not from the unfamiliar site,they have applications which are generally virus affected,so better know about the product first and then download,downloading from unfamiliar site affects your pc from virus
...u can keep ur computer safe even without using antivirus...but u should ensure the following things..

1. there must be a firewall protection on ur computer.

2. visit only trusted sites.

3. don't open unfamiliar e-mails with attacments most of the cases it will be a virus.

4. change ur browser to mozilla firefox, if u r using internet explorer.

5. install a ad-ware or anti spyware software (www.lavasoft.com adware alert is a good software..)
